What is GEO and how does it differ from SEO?

GEO is the term the industry uses for optimizing visibility in AI-generated answers. For Google Search, the official 2026 guidance says that existing SEO practices remain the foundation and that there are no special technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Where the idea of GEO comes from

Search is no longer just a list of results. Users can receive synthesized answers, comparisons and model-generated explorations, together with links to sources. That is where the term GEO came from.

What Google says in 2026

In May 2026 Google published a guide dedicated to optimizing for generative features. SEO remains relevant because AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on the Search systems and on pages in the index.

To appear as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible for Search with a snippet. There is no separate GEO condition.

What does change

AI Mode can use query fan-out, meaning several related searches across different topics and sources. That makes genuinely covering a topic useful, rather than repeating an exact keyword.

What is worth doing

Unique, non-commodity content, real experience, clear explanations, original data, examples, case studies, relevant images and a healthy technical structure. Internal linking should make the important pages easy to discover.

What not to treat as a hack

Google says no special AI files, special markup for AI or artificial chunking tactics are needed. Strategy should aim for usefulness and differentiation.

How we use GEO at BitForm

We use it as a discipline for visibility and citability in AI ecosystems, without artificially separating it from SEO. The foundation remains indexability, clear entities, expert content, evidence and a coherent architecture.
